Honda CR-Z convertible being developed!

CR-ZSportHybrid.com
First it was a die-cast model of the Honda CR-Z convertible (see photos below). Now comes word that Honda is working on the real deal! A convertible Honda CR-Z! In fact, it’s rumored that the convertible was developed in conjunction with the hardtop.
A convertible hybrid would be another first for the industry. Check out the article below and let us know what you think!
The Honda CR-Z so far is getting mixed reviews from many publications. While the Consumer Reports says it can’t even recommend the hybrid hatchback after giving it low ratings, Top Gear Magazine named the car it’s 2011 Green Car of the Year. Whatever the case may be, Honda has some big plans for the CR-Z in the future.
Following reports of a 4-cylinder turbo gasoline model, we hear today that Honda is working on a drop-top CR-Z. Apparently, the Honda CR-Z hatchback and the convertible CR-Z were developed side-by-side. Of course, being a convertible would mean that the drop-top CR-Z will be a heavier car. With that in mind, sources say engineers are considering a beefier 200-hp gasoline-electric combination seen in the Hybrid R Concept.
The model will end up being the world’s first convertible hybrid and will take some inspiration from the Honda Open Study Concept.
When can we expect to see a drop-top CR-Z? We’d say sometime after 2012.

Here is the SEMA 2010 coverage of the Meguiar’s Wraptivo Honda CR-Z.
Wraptivo, owned by Meguiar’s, retailer of designer car wraps, has wrapped the CR-Z in matte and carbon black wraps.
Those are Volk Racing wheels with BF Goodrich tires. And to put those Volk Racing wheels and tires to maximum use, the engine is blown by an HKS supercharger system with a coilover suspension package, an HKS ECU and much more.
The interior carries Recaro seats, numerous Honda genuine accessories such as illuminated door sills, an HKS sport shift knob as well as alcantara-covered panels.
Based on all the blown CR-Z’s at this year’s SEMA, it looks like forced induction will be a very popular aftermarket project for the CR-Z.

Honda CR-Z 3 Driving Modes Explained

The Honda CR-Z has 3 driver selectable driving modes - Econ, Normal, and Sport. It allows the driver to select how the car performs in real-time.

When the CR-Z is first started, it starts in normal mode with standard setting for all systems.

Sport mode has faster, more responsive steering. Throttle comes on stronger with tachometer glowing red. It is meant for more aggressive driving to explore the sport side of the CR-Z.

Econ mode is meant for those times when you want to optimize your mpg such as when you're stuck in traffic. The engines responsiveness is tuned for optimal gas mileage by modifying the throttle for efficiency. It also adjusts the climate control system to reduce its overall load on the engine. The tachometers transitions from blue to green to indicate you're driving efficiently.

Eco Assist is a system that shows how efficiently you are driving. It includes what is called Eco Scoring that grades your last two trips with a neat tree indicator. The more efficient the score, the tree "grows" more leaves.

Here is the Honda's quick low down on the 3 modes:

Quote:
One of the CR-Z's more unique features is its 3-mode drive system. This allows the driver to tailor the driving experience to the actual conditions or personal preference.

The default position is Normal. So whenever you turn the key it will always start out in Normal mode, which provides standard settings for all systems.

Sport mode allows the driver to enjoy the performance side of the CR-Z to its fullest. In Sport mode, the CR-Z will use the electric motor more aggressively, providing quicker acceleration and throttle response. Sport mode also provides a sharper steering feel—great for a curvy stretch of open road.

If you're stuck in traffic on the freeway, you could push the ECON™ button. This will optimize vehicle power and accessory load for maximum efficiency.

The 3-mode drive system makes the CR-Z a versatile machine and gives the driver ultimate control over how the car should perform.

SPORT MODE:
For the CR-Z with 6-speed manual transmission, this mode heightens engine response and motor assist. For the CR-Z with CVT, it selects transmission ratios that heighten engine rpms and acceleration response. For both CR-Z versions, this mode also enhances EPS response for a sporty steering feel.

NORMAL MODE:
This mode leverages IMA's ample torque in the low rpm range for balanced everyday driving. EPS response is similarly balanced and smooth.

ECON MODE:
This mode reduces throttle response and optimizes motor assist for maximal engine efficiency. For the CR-Z with CVT, it selects transmission ratios that lower engine rpms. In addition, it runs the air conditioner more efficiently and lengthens idle stops. EPS response is the same as in Normal mode.

Honda SEMA Press Release: Mugen CR-Z and Hybrid R Concept

Rounding the corner that lead to Honda's booth at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV, I was a bit taken aback as I suddenly found myself confronted with the largest gathering of modified CR-Zs I'd ever seen, twelve in total. Heck, considering that the CR-Z has only been available for a handful of months, this was the largest gathering of any CR-Zs that I'd ever seen. Most of these examples were built by third parties, but at the center of Honda's presentation were a trio of special compact hybrids built by Honda's own: a 2011 CR-Z equipped with Mugen accessories, the ultra-hot CR-Z Hybrid R Concept, and the race ready HPD CR-Z Racer.

The Mugen CR-Z features parts from Honda's Mugen performance division and will be limited to 300 examples. Upgrades include a serial number plaque (from 1-300), a full Mugen body kit, front grille, 17-inch XJ wheels, a black aluminum shift knob, and most obviously, a huge wing spoiler. The Mugen CR-Z will be available in any color the standard CR-Z is. Honda is still working out the pricing.

Moving on to the big show, the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept and the CR-Z Racer feature increased power over the showroom CR-Z thanks to a turbocharger for the 1.5-liter gasoline engine and boosed output from the IMA hybrid system. The upshoot is a pair of sport hybrids that output 200-horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain gains an upgraded clutch to deal with the additional power flowing through the six-speed transmission, a limited slip differential for better grip, and upgraded brakes. The Hybrid R features a full interior, upgraded suspension and alloy wheels, while the CR-Z Racer is gutted and caged with more race appropriate rolling stock. Neither of these concepts is intended for sale.

This CR-Z by Bisimoto Engineering features an eye-catching color and a wild graphics package.

---------------------------------------------

Honda CR-Z Hybrid R Concept
With seriously upgraded power and handling, the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept represents the sort of sports hybrid that many enthusiasts would love for Honda to build.

The Hybrid R is more powerful than the standard CR-Z thanks to a turbocharger for its gasoline engine and an output boost to its IMA hybrid drive system.

The upshoot of these power mods is 200-horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. That sort of output places the Hybrid R in the same class as the Honda Civic Si.

The Hybrid R also receives an upgraded suspension and a full aerodynamics kit. Upgraded brakes, clutch, and a limited slip differential on the front axle are par for the course.

With a unique satin finish and a serious interior upgrade, the Samurai Gold CR-Z by Fortune Motorsports is completely understated.

---------------------------------------------

HPD CR-Z Racer Concept
The HPD CR-Z Racer is a track-ready hybrid that pushes Honda's IMA system to its limits.

The Racer features (or rather doesn't feature) a stripped interior and a full roll cage, as well as the performance upgrades found on the Hybrid R Concept.

---------------------------------------------

2011 Honda CR-Z by Konig Wheels
The Konig CR-Z features a roof rack (which is being put to good use) and an upgraded audio system that features an external speaker pod on its rear bumper.

---------------------------------------------

2011 Honda CR-Z with Mugen accessories
Like the Civic Si and the Fit, Honda is making available for the CR-Z accessories from its Mugen division.

Although Mugen is best known by tuners for its high quality performance upgrades, we were disappointed to learn that the Mugen kit for the CR-Z consists totally of styling upgrades.

Honda will only be making 300 example of the full Mugen kit.

2011 Seibon Honda CR-Z custom
This custom features carbon fiber bits from Seibon (including its prominent hood) and an assortment of suspension and rolling stock upgrades.

2011 Honda CR-Z by Wraptivo
The Wraptivo CR-Z gets a full vinyl wrap with a matte black finish. To tell the truth, even we weren't sure at first if that hood was actually carbon fiber or just wrapped to look like it. (It's real.)

2011 Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid Dominates 2010 SEMA Show

11/02/2010 – LAS VEGAS
Twelve modified 2011 Honda CR-Z sport hybrid coupes are featured prominently in the Honda booth at the 2010 SEMA Show, which opens today. As the first available sport hybrid, the CR-Z demonstrates new opportunities for vehicle personalization among the import tuner community. Several significant vehicles are being unveiled at the show, including a 2011 CR-Z equipped with MUGEN* accessories, the Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD) CR-Z Hybrid R Concept, the HPD CR-Z Racer and several vehicles equipped with Honda Genuine Accessories.

“With the CR-Z sport hybrid coupe, drivers can achieve the great efficiency of a hybrid car without giving up the fun that many demand from a sporty car,” said Bruce Smith, vice president of Parts Operations for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The combination of greener practicality with style and fun makes this vehicle a perfect fit for young, environmentally conscious buyers looking to further personalize their cars.”

A 2011 CR-Z equipped with MUGEN accessories is also being revealed, and Honda announced that in the spring of 2011, it will begin sales of a limited-edition MUGEN accessory kit for the vehicle. Limited to only 300 complete kits, the package includes: a full MUGEN body kit; a front grille; a rear wing spoiler; 17-inch “XJ” aluminum wheels; sport mats; a unique black aluminum shift knob and a billet aluminum oil-filler cap. Further, after purchase, each owner will receive a unique serial-number plaque designating each kit as one of 300 available. All of the painted parts will come color-matched to each of the five available CR-Z colors. Pricing details will be made available closer to the on-sale date.

Also unveiled today were two concept vehicles from HPD: the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept and the HPD CR-Z Racer. Though neither vehicle is intended for sale, HPD, Honda’s North American racing company, was determined to demonstrate the potential of the CR-Z for both street and racing performance. Both vehicles share many performance enhancements, with the CR-Z Hybrid R Concept highlighting Honda-designed street styling and the HPD CR-Z Racer opting for serious racing capability. To demonstrate that capability, HPD will campaign two HPD CR-Z Racers at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill endurance race in December. HPD enhancements to both cars include: a turbocharger and upgraded IMA™ hybrid system, resulting in an estimated combined 200 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. of torque; performance clutch; limited-slip differential; ‘circuit-tuned’ suspension; upgraded brakes and aerodynamic components.

Two vehicles were on display to demonstrate currently available Honda Genuine Accessories. For the CR-Z, Honda displayed a vehicle equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels; side, front lip and tailgate spoilers; a rear diffuser; an illuminated door-sill trim and an interior armrest. Additionally, a 2010 Accord Coupe equipped with dealer-installed Honda Factory Performance™ (HFP™) components melded a distinctive, custom appearance with an enhanced level of handling performance. All Honda Genuine Accessories offer the same 3-year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty as the rest of the vehicle, when installed at the time of new vehicle purchase, and are engineered to be fully compatible with each Honda vehicle.

On display as a demonstration concept only, the Accord Crosstour HFP Concept features 19-inch HFP wheels; a full HFP body kit and front grille; a prototype lowered HFP sport suspension; color-matched door handles and special black-out door sash trim.

Reaching out to the import community, Honda invited six independent vehicle tuners to build and display their CR-Z hybrid concepts at the SEMA Show. Tuners were asked to push the limits to improve fuel economy and performance with their builds, and the vehicles on display show the variety of directions in which a personalized sport hybrid can go. Beyond this group, both the Los Angeles Auto Show and Honda Tuning Magazine displayed their CR-Z special project cars in the Honda booth.
